Abstract

It’s no exaggeration to say that simulation is more important than ever in today’s rapidly expanding industrial and consumer environment. Our customers are pushing the boundaries of engineering simulation in ways we could never have imagined. “Pervasive engineering simulation” describes this expansion of simulation into increasingly complex and diverse settings. This means simulation is making inroads into all aspects of engineering practice, from fully exploring a product’s design parameter space to virtually testing thousands of potential designs to monitoring and optimizing industrial operations. These three aspects are known as digital exploration, digital prototyping and digital twins, respectively.

Curriculum

Federico de-la-Mora is passionate about Information Technology and its applications to solve complex business challenges. Before joining ANSYS in 2017, he managed the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) operations at Lastline, Tripwire (a Belden company) and nCircle. He has in-depth experience as a managing director for Western Europe. Throughout his career, Federico delivered complex IT solutions through multi-route go-to-market models to large organisations like Akzo Nobel, Proximus (Belgacom), SAP, Toyota Europe, British Telecom, NXP, Vodafone and SABMiller, to name but a few. He has also built and managed single-tier and two-tier distribution channels across EMEA.

Abstract

Numerical simulation techniques as the famous finite element method have essentially contributed during the last decades to virtually validate and optimize designs of components and complex systems with more and more accuracy in terms of physics behavior, but far from real-time in terms of performance. Both worlds of numerical simulation and real-time embedded software have followed their own progress roadmaps without crossing and interconnecting.
Today these two worlds converge towards each other with the concept and associated technologies of « Digital Twin ».
This talk describes the technology stack (software, numerical simulation, big data streaming and analytics,…) necessary to develop a digital twin enabling to simulate accurately the real-time behviour in operation of a complex system (asset). This digital twin is fed by measurements issued from sensors equipping the asset. Tremendous progress of high performance computing (HPC) and Big Data Analytics (BDA) coupled to the emergence of reduced order models techniques have enabled Ansys to drastically accelerate simulations until real-time if needed. The advantages brought by simulation models and their complementarity with data analytics models will be also addressed: enrichment by virtual sensors, “what if” scenarii to rapidly analyse the efficiency of solutions to detected anomalies.
Examples of digital twins applied to predictive maintenance (alerts, corrections and optimizationns) in many industrial sectors will be illustrated.
We will finally address how associated technologies to embedded reduced order models within control loops of real-life devices will revolutionize accuracy of control commands.

Abstract

Digital prototyping enables designs to be optimized, verified and validated against requirements using structural, thermal, electromagnetic and fluidic simulation, either in isolation or in coupled multiphysics or system-level studies. You can build an accurate and comprehensive simulation model to predict the performance of your detailed designs and reduce the need for physical testing. Digital protoypes provide insight into actual product performance and enable you to rapidly innovate beyond the limits of traditional build-test-break-redesign methods.
